Face melter. A top 5 vocal tribal track of all time. Everybody who was anyone at the time had a try at this track: Deep Dish, Hani, Mike Rizzo, and the quintessential version by tribal legends Danny Tsetto and Richie Santana. They turn drums out. HARD HARD HARD hitting drums and a nasty electro siren bring the fierce vocals of De'Lacy higher and higher. Its pure energy. Everything about this track goes off. Richie Santana was a pioneer in the mid 1990's tribal movement of New York City. Tsetto came in around the same time and was a frequent guest of Junior Vasquez's Earth. Its a 10 minutes long EPIC anthem worth taking the ride with.

I really want to over analyze every one of these tracks, but I think this mix speaks on its own. The energy from these tracks had me in the zone. Its a great collection of house, pop, and hip-hop from the early 90's (1990-1994). Shep Pettibone, Ben Lieberman, David Morales, and E-Smoove deliver the classic piano house treatment to hip-hop/rnb singles while New Yorker's Junior Vasquez, Todd Terry, Murk and Baltimore's Basement Boys (of Crystal Waters producing fame) throw down some heavy moving drum tracks. Tracks from Deee-lite, 2 in a Room, and Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch are infused with many elements and breaks now popular in many Baltimore Club records. Both versions of Pussycat Meow are amazing and had to be extended in the mix. Couldn't get enough of either mixes so I had to put both on. If you're fans of the first early 90's dance mix you'll be all over this.

1) Pete Tong totally ripped off a Todd Terry track for that Madonna remix. When I heard it I was so confused. Still a hot record, but Tong....c'mon! Heard it on the last essential selection.

2) I officially brought back Bad Yard Club - In The Ghetto. People are playing and remixing the hell out of it. I'm glad people are taking a listen to house of 'the past'.

3) The Early 90's House Mix Pt. II is done!
So much fire: Heavy D + David Morales, Shep Pettibone, Ben Lieberman, Murk (early Murk still holds strong today I'm telling you, way ahead of their time), E-Smoove, Deee-Lite, Opus III, Junior Vasquez, the Good Vibrations DUB (nasty bmore house with LOL Marky Mark Intro "I want something that BUMPS in my JEEP") It clocks in at right under 45 minutes. Give it 2 Me (Pete Tong Dub)

What can I say about Pete Tong. He's one of my favorite people alive. He has access to the hottest beats in the world. I learned from listening to the essential selection. Back when everything wasn't on the internet I'd have to order records from all over Europe just to get my hand on some of Pete's trainspotters. He's recently started producing with UK's David Spoon who I think was behind a lot of bootleg filtered disco records early in the 2000's, but I could have him confused with another Spoon.

Tong murders all the remixes for Give it 2 Me. The vocal version is a little much for me, but the dub utilizes the right amount of vocals to refix the Neptunes produced original. If you like the European Big Room sound you'll be all over this one. This is the best Madonna rework done by someone other than Stuart Price siiinncee......thinking....that ROCKING early nyc house remix of Nothing Fails by one of the kings of NY PETER RAUHOFER which is insanely epic, not just for Madonna, but for Peter.

Long story short, I got one of my computers back from the feds after years of trying to get it back and it had some remixes I got from S. Ronson awhilllllle ago. So whats with all the Roc-A-Fella on this mixtape? In 2002 Samantha Ronson was the first 'rock' act signed to Jay and Dame's label. And how did the step kids of the guitarist from Foreigner sign to one of the biggest rap labels in the world? Dame Dash hired Charlotte Ronson, Samantha's twin sister, to help design a line through Roc-a-Wear when he discovered both Ronson's musical talents. Samantha was slated to release an album in 2004 titled Red produced by herself, her brother, and Dallas Austin, but was shelved permanently when her single "Pull My Hair Out" received little radio airplay. She parted ways with the label and continues to DJ around the world. Why is she relevant today? Well...she's not. She's received more press extinguishing Lindsay Lohan's firecrotch than her brother Mark winning the Grammy for Producer of the Year. I got a CD-R of mash-ups by Samantha, but a third of them are over an early instrumental version of MJ's Rock With You. I mean if anyone really has a use for that over Maroon 5 I'll put it up, but hey thats on you. Here's a remix of 99 Problems that sample "Pull My Hair Out".

I'm not a huge Mark Ronson fan so lets just assume he got to where he is because his mom married a famous dude and lets call it even. His first major label production was off of Nikka Costa's Everybody's Got Their Something. She was one of those overhyped MTV buzz clips that didn't make a dent anywhere except during the credits of whatever season of Real World/Road Rules challenge they were on in 2001. The single was heavily sleeped on as the world wasn't quite ready for Mark's white girl doing their best black vocalist impressions until about a year ago. Its a solid rock/rnb number worth the listen.

I Can't Wait is one of the best songs to come out of the 80's. Its one of those songs I lose myself in every time I hear it. How do you even classify this one? Its an early style hip-hop based pop record. The first time I saw a picture of John Smithand Valerie Day of Nu Shooz it took a second to put together that those guys were making these records. I wish I heard this song out more often.

Nu Shooz - I Can't Wait 1984

Nu Shooz will always be remembered for I Can't Wait. They actually had another chart hit with their second single Point of No Return. I like this better than I Can't Wait. I have the 7 inch in my jukebox right next to Two of Hearts in the 80's section. Its freestyle-dance record from Portland, Oregon and its GREAT. Just as good as the Expose track of the same name.

Nu Shooz - Point of No Return

Another great RnB dance record by Nu Shooz. The song of full of freestyle, rnb, and hip-hop elements not to mention there's an awesome guitar solo in it which gives the track a Nile Rodgers produced sound.

Nu Shooz - Don't Let Me Be The One

Their album Poolside has another gem or two worth checking out if you dig anything you've heard so far. They had a lot of chart success with the album and was one of the better hip-hop/dance records of the 80's. One reason though I don't think they weren't as popular as they could have been is their music videos. The I Can't Wait video is a surreal bore and the Point of the No Return video looks like an SVA student's senior thesis on tennis shoes.

There are so many great remixes for this track: Vitalic, Emperor Machine, Trentemøller, and the masterpiece of them all the Thin White Duke aka Stuart Price remix. Its one Bushy's and mines favorite songs of all time. I did this re-edit using only samples from the Thin White Duke remix itself. I rebuilt the payoff/money shot into a more jumpy/miami bass-ish sound. This edit cuts through the chase and bangs. I probably wouldn't have made this if Bushy hadn't of though up that contest, so its named after him.

When I hear certain songs all I can think to myself is "THEY SHOULD HAVE GAVE THIS TO MICHAEL JACKSON!". Probably my favorite non-MJ/Rick James 80's r'n'b song even more than anything off of Bobby Brown's Don't Be Cruel. Speaking off Michael, this is random, the Neptunes had produced a whole albums worth of material for the Invincible album and he rejected all of it. The Neptunes turned the songs over to Justin and there his career went. You can hear the MJ in all the Neptunes produced JT tracks.. Its pure MJ. Drives me crazy. Go listen to Rock Your Body again! Anyways...

I recorded this when I was DJ'ing for Missie B's. Its a men on films 'club' in Kansas City. It was a double edge sword working there. The pay wasn't great, but I'd walk out of there with two or three times as much money in tips alone. I could write a book on what queens want to listen to ages 18-108. I'd play everything from Eartha Kitt to Britney to RYE RYE, I mean I played everything. I'd even throw down some Ramones I did not care. If I could mix it and they would dance to it I would play it. It was a nice change of pace for this place according to a lot of the customers who grew tired of the same Mainstream Club Promo Only Freemason disco crap. Not too long after I began my residency there I developed a few stalkers. There were men who would wait outside for me before or after my set, sit in the dark corners of the bar until the bar closed, starring at my 20 year old body like a piece of meat. They would send me over parades of drinks, business cards, and hungry stares. The program director of a big urban radio station in Kansas City offered to put me on a guest spot if I went home with him. It wasn't just the older men either. I couldn't talk to almost anyone without it eventually turning into a sad, drunken, attempt to get in my DJ pajamas. The start of every conversation always seemed innocent enough. They enjoyed the music I was playing, ask me about dance music, and then the conversation would eventually end and I found myself getting hit on more times than a hot babe walking down the streets of New York. "Wow you are hot". When this first happened to me I would say "Thanks" and brushed it off because what else am I supposed to say? Eventually the compliments grew vulgar and it became more difficult to play music comfortably. Guy's waiting outside my DJ booth for me to make a move to the bar. I had a guy kicked out for trying to check out my junk while trying to use the bathroom. It all became way too much after awhile and the money wasn't worth it anymore. I'd show up late or tried to switch nights with the other horrible DJ's in an attempt to avoid some of my audience. I stopped showing up all together and told the owner I was only 20 and was being harassed on the daily. I didn't think twice about it until I was getting e-mail's from people asking when I was coming back. When I wasn't being bothered I was on fire. I was pulling out tracks that would send people on a time warp. It would make their night. I loved nothing more than having people come up to me after the show and thanking me for playing and how when I played X song it reminded them of a certain time in their lives. They couldn't thank me enough that I was able to let them return to the moment again even if its just for one song. Its nice to get props for something I worked hard at that none of the other DJ's there could do.

What does any of that have to do with this mix? Well this was the peak of my time there. This was the party of all parties at this joint and I killed it and I will never forget it. I have been listening to dance music since I was born and I was finally able to play some of music that influence my style of DJ'ing in its element. It was a beautiful moment when I couldn't hear Cece Peniston over the chanting from the crowd or hearing Dreamlover dropped at the right place or when I finally got to A Deeper Love and I felt what the song was talking about. I was proud to be where I was with the people I was with doing what I love to do more than anything in this entire universe. I hope in a few years the next time people hear one of the songs I played that night it will remind them of that moment we shared at Missie B's.

The History of Madison Avenue

In 1998 they met at the Chaser's club.

One short year later they were on top of every dance chart in the world.

This is the story of defunct Australian dance duo Madison Avenue.

Andy Van Dorsselaer found the Vicious Vinyl label in the late 80's out of Frankston, AU. Cheyne Coates was a dance instructor out of Melbourne. Together they planned to pen and produce tracks under the Vicious label. One of their first projects is a groovy house number sampling Pino D'angio slick Italo disco hit "Ma Quale Idea". Andy used Cheyne as the session singer for the song. It was originally planned to give the song to another singer on Vicious, but Andy and Cheyne both realized they already had something special on their hands. "Don't Call Me Baby" was born. It was a worldwide commercial success selling over 3 millions copies around the world, topping the dance charts in US, Europe, Australia and topping the single charts in New Zealand and the UK (knocking Oops I Did It Again from the top spot) . It wasn't until I heard the original track it samples from did I understand how hot of a flip this is. Cheyne's snobby yet soft, filtered vocals, play perfectly with the energy of the bumping bassline and overlapped disco hand claps. The dub is amazingly funky. I moved to LA around the time this came out. This was one of the three dance tracks playing on KIIS FM all the time (the other was Alice Deejay "Better Off Alone" and Sonique "Feels So Good". This is the rap equivalent of Yah Trick Yah. For my ex who I know googles me everyday and reads what I'm up to TAKE A HUGE HINT.

The 2nd single is much of the same, filtered disco pop. This mix by Andy Van and John Course tame the off the wall funkiness of the original. It keeps a very house vibe and then it breaks down with a big trumpet solo. Another Australian #1 and US Dance Chart topper.

Unfortunately the remix worth having isn't with me right now. I had the Olav Basoski Mix on white label many years ago. I didn't have it for a long time until I hung out with this mobile DJ and he had every copy of Promo Only Mainstream Club from Summer 98 to now. This other guy I played with had it all the way back since the Mortal Kombat Techno Theme came out. To my surprise I find the mix on one of the issues and rip the hell out of it. Put it on my flash drive, burnt it onto a cd, and where is it now? Gone. This guy on the board said he'd personally ship me his copy from England and I never got it. I know I put it somewhere and it drives me crazy. Its just the hardest hitting filtered disco house record of all time. 7 minutes of raw Basoski rocking a sample out. Its ridiculous. Madison Avenue - Everything You Need (Olav Basoski Remix) 2000

Not too long after this they broke up. Andy Van Dorsselaer formed badass electro group Vandalism. They've done great tracks like "Boys and Girls" and have worked with Harry Choo Choo Romero. Madison Avenue came, saw, and conquered in their short reign as Dance King and Queen. They left behind fun party records. What has reminded me so much of them recently is the Pino d'Angio track. I've been playing that one out for awhile and sometimes I get the urge to listen to the Madison Avenue flip. This is a random topic. It was something I knew wasn't gonna take me more than 3 songs to make a complete entry on. It'd make more sense if I had that Olav Basoski remix. I'm just trying to get back in the ZONE.

Armand Van Helden

When Armand Van Helden isn't busy fucking big headed, no talent, party promoters like a rabbit, he's producing some big jams.

Let me talk about I Want Your Soul. Apparently it was a big hit of 07. It sucks. The original track is a billion times better. How many times do we have to hear the same song over and over. How many times has the sample x line from 80's song and filter it in and out for 7 minutes have to happen. I thought we were over that 4 years ago!?

Touch Your Toes had some good remixes, but then again how hard would it be to work with those Fat Joe vocals? You could throw that over the instrumental of Lets Hear It For the Boys (it exists) and it'd sound alright.

1995 came around and Atlantic thought 'Tori Amos could be the next club queen!'. Actually I don't know what they were thinking. This track still confuses the hell out of me. I've heard the original once and have NO IDEA how AVH came up with what he came up with. They gave him all the freedom in the world to do whatever. They wanted something nobody had ever heard before and thats what they got. The bassline and vocal sample that changed the game. The other remixes of this song are actually remixes of the AVH remix.

Why am I being so harsh on AVH? Its because he's an innovator and he has subjected himself recently to rehash sounds that have been done to death. I hold him to the highest of standards. He's created some timeless masterpieces in his 15 year history.

I don't feel like writing too much at the moment. I just haven't been IN THE ZONE. Also found out that I have 3 months to decide whether I'm moving to Miami or San Antonio. BIG DECISION! I'm leaning towards Miami. I've never been, but I'd move there just for the fact that its the origin of 2 Live Crew. Also Oscar G and Ralph Falcon hold residency there. I need to be around super clubs. I'm so tired of Kansas City. This place brings out the worst in me.

Another New Yorker and Puerto Rican, Hex Hector, broke out onto the scene with a massive remix of Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart". It wasn't until he got a call from former club kid and fly girl, Jennifer Lopez, did Hector really move into the realm of superstar producer. Waiting For Tonight is actually a cover of defunct girl group "3rd Party". Epic bought the song, Ric Wake of Metro produced it, and they had a hit dance record on their hand. When Hex unleashed his remix to the public it was OVER for everyone else. Easily the most epic mainstream dance production of all time. It killed in the club, it killed on MTV, and it killed on radio. Definitely a major NYC Anthem. As a DJ you can't just drop this at anytime. You have to build your set AROUND this song. This is one of those songs after a night of dj'ing people come up to me and say 'that reminded me of when I was at _____'. So hot people have flashbacks. The whole breakdown deserves to be played all the way through. Some mainstream productions think they have to include this epic breakdown because of course their tune is an 'anthem'. WRONG! An epic breakdown, not done properly, is a sure way to get a lot of confused stares towards the DJ booth and well definitely fuck up the vibe and the dancefloor. This breakdown, when played appropriately, sends people onto another planet. Great video by Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Vogue). After this song Hex went on the remix for everyone with over 50+ commissioned releases in 2000. Easily the best thing he's ever done.

I got a new girlfriend so today is going to be a long day. I was in the car with her yesterday and I had to listen to her cd mix. It was like: Rihanna ft. Ne-yo, Five, Avril Lavigne, and Backstreet Boys. She had one good song, that calabria with Nastaja. As soon as I turned it up to blast it she took the cd out. "I hate that song! I only put it on because it was on a chart." PSSH! Best version of calabria I've heard in a minute. I was looking like Pase Rock doing the crazy legs. Sorry its taken me so long to post. I'm hooking up mad flat screens, video mixing equipment, remodeling my dance floor, rearranging the entire club format I work at. Its been taking so much time. Got to prepare for this Kansas City take over. Yah trick! Yah!

Masters at Work

When MAW broke onto the scene in 1990 things were really getting good in the NY house world. You know what I'm really hung over, but I told myself I was going to finish this so I'm going to give it to you quick. In this case the music really speaks for itself. I look up to these amazing latinos. MAW is Little Louis Vega and Kenny Dope from the Bronx. They both started out playing block parties and small clubs in the mid 80's before moving on to do Studio 54 and Sound Factory. In 87 they met legendary producer and DJ Todd Terry. They worked on records together, Terry lent the moniker to the duo, and off they went. They're a mixture of Latin, Soul, and Diva house. Now to the records.

Saint Entienne is an indie dance band from the UK. I haven't listened to their first album in a long while, but I remember it being a very housey release coming out of rock at the time. The original is a cover of a Neil Young. This is a very dubby track, you would never guess its a Neil Young cover. Ca-lassic. One of the first tracks the duo have done together. Great production.

Saint Entienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart (MAW Dub) 1990

You know Chic right? Le Freak, I Want Your Love, and Good Times. You don't? You need to have your head z-rayed. Most important of Chic is Niles Rodgers. He is the man and produced both David Bowie's Lets Dance and Madonna's Like a Virgin. So the disco backlash disbanded them and for years he went his own way producing. In 1992 Chic got together, along with Paul Shaffer YES FROM LETTERMAN, and played a birthday party for someone at Warner, the name escapes me right now. Anyways the place went nuts over them and Bernard Edwards and Niles started producing material for a new album. They came up with this billboard dance chart topper, a jumpy diva track with a WHOLE lot of attitude. Great breakdown and a slammin piano.

Chic - Chic Mystique (MAW Club Mix) 1992

Philly disco trio First Choice always turns it out. Latin house banger! Oh man this is a hot one. Sooo much flavor all over the track. They kill it with the samba drums. Really I can't say enough. Great group, classic record. I got the instrumental mix by Frankie Knuckles that is on the same record which will definitely get posted up soon.

My favorite. This latin club cut goes off from beginning to end. None of the remixes even come close. They shouldn't even have tried how could you improve on this? KTU in NYC used to play this one out a lot. Honestly I can't think of too many latin house records that kill it this hard.

MAW is just one of those group that if you like one record you'll love them all. They've been keeping it fresh the last 18 years. Check out their new stuff with Mr. V. More 'contemporary' latin house party tracks. Also sorry this took me so long to put together. I'm getting involved with someone. Ok I'll go on another rant. I have a hard time dating someone with no taste in music. I know I sound like an elite music snob, that is not the case, but when I look at your Facebook profile and I see "Hip hop, Top 40. some rock music.Favorites are EMINEM! He is da shiznit! Also like Linkin Park, Rihanna, Shop boys, Fall out boy, Britney, Chris Brown, Crank that by soulja boy!! Blake Lewis, Daughtry, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, BSB, T-Pain, Avril Lavigne" I just about lose it. Maybe I'm asking too much. Everyone's entitled to like whatever kind of music they want, but can't you just try a little harder? I like music A LOT. I can't talk about music with someone like that. They don't care who produced it or where it came from. Its just in one ear and out the other. Its my generation, we have had entertainment overload since we were born. I don't think people take as much time to actually listen to music as they did before. Haha I'm talking like a 50 year old guy in a 21 year old's body. Man how do I turn off this underline? Is it weird that one of the first questions I ask someone I'm dating is how much do you like Michael Jackson? ALSO I hate when I ask someone what kind of music they like and they say "Oh I like everything'. Thats a bunch of bullshit. That doesn't tell me anything about you and I know you have two John Meyer cd's in your car right now. Thats what you like. John Meyer. You don't like Salsa, you don't like Italo Disco, you don't like Japanese folk music. You like John Meyer just say it. Or if I ask a DJ and they say "I play everything". Just tell me what you play I'm not dumb. I didn't ask if you liked everything I said WHAT. Its ok I will suck it up. Just had to let that out its been swimming around in the back of my mind.

Madonna - Erotica Era Mixes

I was planning on doing an epic thesis on the history of Madonna and her relationship to the American club scene, but I got way over my head. This DJ I was talking to in Kansas City plays straight up house. He complains that all people want to do is listen to Madonna. When I told him that she has an important role in American House music he just rolled his eyes like the stupid bitch that he is. Madonna, with the help of Shep Pettibone, showed the world what was going on in the NY dance scene with Vogue. That was such a massive record. Who else was doing that with style and class on that level? I think everyone's love for house music stems from mainstream dance records. No one just wakes up and goes "I like Chicago house" just out of the blue. You don't really 'get it' right away. Its something I think you grow to like. To me, and a lot of people who weren't around for disco, Madonna is that basic foundation of dance music. Not only is has she been a huge influence musically, but she has inspired many people by her strong, take charge character. She is who she is, makes no apologies for it, pushes buttons, and has been consistently successful in her musical endeavors. This era might have been the most important of Madonna's. Her raw sexuality shook the mainstream media. Erotica was a critique of 1990's America commercialization of Sex. The remixes were Sex on the dance floor.

I'm assuming everyone knows her classic stuff. I got dubs and instrumentals that will get posted down the line, but I think I'm going to start with her Erotica era. This album was almost entirely produced by Shep Pettibone and Madonna. Its main influences are the house and jazz scenes of NYC at the time. Masters At Work were very very hot during the early 90's. They really turned the dark hip-hop sound of the original into a smooth dubby house hit. Both mixes by MAW.

The 5th Single from Erotica. I omitted Rain, the 4th single, because I don't like it and nothing was commissioned for it. The N.Y. Hip Hop remix is probably the best reworking of the song, but I gotta stick to house productions. Honestly I'm not a huge fan of this one, but someone might like it. This mix was done by Ricky Crespo of C & C Music Entertainment. All I can really hear is Shep. Cool random sample of Vogue thrown into the mix. I also included the Up Down Suite (Dub) that was included on the EP of Bye Bye Baby and of the Japanese Rain EP. Its an epic house track by Shep. I don't know too much about it other than it kicks ass. My favorite release from this era. Its a must have if you're into anything that you've heard so far.

Junior Vasquez

Junior Vasquez is 61 years old! He's been in the NYC game since before some of us were born. Sound Factory, Twilo, Earth, Palladium and the Tunnel are all places JV has came and conquered. He's the Wilt Chamberland of the billboard dance chart with more #1's than anyone in history. He is NYC in its essence. He built his entire career out of the city. He never left. The Europeans don't understand him. Junior is AMERICAN house. No one in Europe was doing what Junior was doing when he came on the scene.

X-Press 2 broke out with Say What in 1993. One his earlier productions. For Junior Vasquez this is pretty street. The tribal sound was blowing up around the time of this record. Its still has its hints of jack house.

JV's first solo record. This track has so much attitude to it. Defines Sound Factory. The vocals are lifted from the intro of Opal - Ain't No Way.

Finally I get to this record. Madonna usually keeps whoever is hot in NYC as her remixer dj du jour. Started with Shep Peittibone, MAW, David Morales, and in around 1994 moved to Junior. His first official remix for her was Secret which was a monster club record. JV really broke out. I remember seeing the video remix on MTV. Madonna keeps JV around. He does Bedtime Story, and Human Nature for her and they all go #1. In 1995 he released the white label to this record. It was a huge NYC success. Uses a answering machine Madonna leaves him and turns it into one of the biggest NYC house records of all time. She got soooo pissed she cut all ties with him and stayed in Miami. Loves this record. 100% Drums and Attitude.

This is a fucking anthem. That remix name isn't lying. 14 Minute Marathon Junior at this best. Junior is known for his marathon sets playing for as long as 24 hours. He's known to have a lot of 10+ min long mixes. Big record from Funky Green Dogs aka Oscar G and Ralph Falcon aka Miami dj duo MURK. Great vocal record. Makes my hand go straight in the air. DJ's you can jump in and out of this record in at least 4 or 5 places.

Funky Green Dogs - Fired Up (Junior's Twilo Anthem Edit) 1996

So "Smile" was going to be the last single off of Blood on the Dancefloor, but he was too hopped up on pain killers to do anything. He was a wreck. And that time period did suck for Mike. Do you remember "Ghost" or "Is it Scary?" no you don't. This remix was supposed to be included on the single, but it was canceled weeks before its release date. This got leaked and I have to say its damn good for a Michael remix. Not anyone can remix Michael. Its not an easy thing to do. This is one of his better ones. Great upbeat mix from Junior. What a creepy single cover though.

Michael Jackson - Off the Wall (Junior Vasquex Remix) 1996

Anthem 2 exclusive. There are some epic stuff on these cd's. Big tribal synth anthem. Junior at what he does best, working with Divas. The vocals are nice, even though I have no idea what she's talking about. Catchy as hell though.

Sophie B. Hawkins - Beautiful Girl (Junior Vasquez Mix) 2003

His best work is with Madonna, but I'm saving that for an epic post I'm going to work on this weekend. I'm just going to drop all her best stuff all in one day so I can just get it out of the way. Damn thats gonna take a long time. Junior is someone I admire a lot. He's a great guy and huge influence on how I learned to build sets and how to create drama in the room.

David Morales

If I had to choose how my DJ career was going to go I'd want it to be something like David Morales. Bad ass Puerto Rican. He changed the entire DJ game with one record. He's worked with every elite pop artist. He owns Stereo. He was the KING of Sound Factory back when it was Sound Factory and not a guido showcase. Pacha, Frankie Knuckles, Satoshi Tomiie, and Mariah. All things that make him Morales.

So you wanna know something? Morales and Mariah are a match made in heaven. I know a lot of people don't want to give Mariah much credit, but she deserves it. After her first record she finally got some creative control over what she was doing. She was spending a lot of time in NYC recording and going out. She hears David at The Loft and falls in love. This is one of the first instances where an artist re-sang the vocals specifically for the remix treatment. You can tell she knew what she was doing on this record. Vision of love. It made a smash remixer out of David Morales and Frankie Knuckles who helped produce the mix and a club Diva out of Mariah. The intro does start out a little weird or as DJ Mike B said "Sounds like Pee-Wee Herman Nightmare music", but give it the minute to kick in and it will take you on a "Classic" house ride. I will say something else though, their mix of Fantasy is even better. They even bring the remix down to its original tempo and build it back up with wild sirens and it just goes OFF. Hotter than Mariah herself. And if you already dig those two I threw up his remix of My All which is more of the same. A subtle, low-key, classic style house mix.

During Michael Jackson's HIStory era Morales was his and Janet's choice remixer. He worked closely with him during his Blood On The Dancefloor release. He produced two remixes for the record, one for "You Are Not Alone" and "This Time Around". His first remix for Michael was "Scream" featuring Janet. One cool thing about the remix is that he loops the famous "Stop FUCKING with me" line in the end. Morales continues to keep with his piano-based Classic mix sounds. His first remix for Janet was on the UK Promo for Throb. Big NYC Anthem from 93. Big drums, big organ, killer sax, sexy vocals, with a classic vibe.

Michael Gray & Jon Pearn from the UK make up Full Intention. They make amazing disco/funky house records. You might recognize Michael Gray's name from his record "Weekend" which was a big smash a couple of years ago. Full Intention has such a smooth style. Like a disco Basement Boys. Full Intention have been the game since their first white label in 1995. They've topped the billboard dance chart with remixes of Ultra Nate, Whitney Houston, and Jennifer Lopez which are all surprisingly solid Full Intention records.

This record was released in 1997. The Mood II Swing mixes of this song are classic. Full Intention give a smooth funky mix treatment. I'd recommend the Dub specifically. The vocals on the Dub hit just right. The vocal mix does have an awesome buildup at the end. Maybe a re-edit is in order.

Deep Dish

Deep Dish are two Iranian DJ's in DC. They run the Yoshitoshi label. They've been around the world and back a billion times. There sound has changed from a progressive-e sound to a deeper house and now they do some pretty commercial house (that sucks). I couldn't get into their version of Dreams with Stevie Nicks, but I do know a drag queen that will perform the fuck out of that remix. Another random tidbit of information I have is that their remix of Pop by NSYNC is just an old house record they did in like 97, they slapped the acapella over it, and collected their checks. Can't blame them that song sucked. Guess I'll start chronologically so you can hear the progression they've made over time.

You fucking tell it De'Lacy. This track ruled the clubs back in 1995. This is how it used to be done. You know what does suck about this song though is that I wasn't around to see it in its element. The great torture of my life. I can FEEL the song. I understand the music, but thats one thing and being there is another. When I talk to old DJ's about this and other records they get excited. They tell me about where they were when they heard it or who they were with. They tell me how they can close their eyes and just feel being at the club with their friends and what was going on in their life. I mean I remember where I heard this too, in my bedroom. I was just a kid. Well I still am. But what also makes me think is what songs will I look back upon from this era and think the same way these DJ's do? We're not gonna get another revolution like that.

This was done in 98. Phenomenal deep vocal record. Brother Brown is on the Yoshitoshi label. They themselves have done remixes for Dido, Madonna, and Oris Jay. Please excuse the 128kbp MP3. I ripped this a hundred years ago. I've tested this out on a club system the rip is solid.

So the first wave of remixes for this track was done by Thunderpuss and DLK. The Thunderpuss mix is just way too over the top, even for them, and didn't really suit the vocals like it should. Deep Dish MURDERED this one. Commissioned a year later in 1999. This is one of my favorite records. Its just sex on wax.

This is a White Label I distinctly remember picking up. It was at the Eightball Record Shop in NYC. I used to make a trip there once a month and just dig through all their white labels. Man that place was so awesome. I remember finding a stack of still shrink wrapped If Madonna Calls records and just geeking out. They featured it on the wall and the record was revived in NYC that year. I think its a really important NYC anthem, but thats another post. So this is just a deep deep deep progressive mix. Very dark, very NYC at the time. I gotta do a Madonna post too, get that all out of the way. I'm sitting everything she's ever done so it'll be a good post.

Some DJ's might think "Britney Spears ohhh hellll naw I'm too fucking cool for that shit". Fuck off. Its not about the label, its about the music. Especially with remixes. Some people have enough talent to turn nothing into something.

She's just everywhere right now. You can't go anywhere without hearing about her. Britney has had some surprisingly awesome reworks of her tracks. One of my favorites is the James Holden Vocal & Dub of Breathe On Me. Got these from James a couple of years back. The single was canceled and the only remix to see the light of day was by Stuart Price aka Jacque Lu Cont aka Thin White Duke who will definitely be getting his own post in the future. James murdered this one. Breath-e electro planet-e madness. Still gives me chills listening to it.

Pimp Juice aka DJ Monk and Chris Hawkes turned out some 'blog-house/nu-rave' (who the fuck thought of those names? whatever best way I can describe it) mixes for Britney. They did "Crazy" and "Stronger". The dubs hit HARD, but my dumbass lent a crate of records to my friend and both of those promos are in there and I doubt I will ever see them again and I'm not shelling out $20 for Britney records. This was done in 2000 and 1999. See thats why I don't understand the whole nu-house shit. Shits always sounded like that. Maybe they didn't have rainbow nike wearing dancing clowns back in 2000, but they still had that sound. Its not 'nu'. And WTF is up with nu? Get that Linkin Park shit out of here. Everyone and their mom has remixed Gimme More. Most of the time it sucked. The one remix I was disappointed with the most was the DJ Eli mix featuring Amanda Blank. Amanda Blank might be hot, but keep that bitch away from the microphone. She can't rap and she sounds like a constipated lesbian. Just do like Diddy did with Cassie. Put her in pictures, videos, whatever you gotta do, but don't let me hear her. I'm a big fan of Eli, I got my fake ID taken away again in attempt to see him DJ, but that was garbage. Anyways this edit is great. Mixed it with some Switch, turns out hot. I know people still bug you to play the song, now you can play this version.

BBB Revival

I'm starting this back up after bequeathing 3,000 pieces of vinyl from a DJ who passed away that had only heard me play once. I can't even begin to say how thankful I am. The best part about everything is this DJ felt that passion that he's had since the beginning of the DJ culture in my playing. I'm glad to know someone understands me and believes I'm heading in the right direction.
